Good Tack Shop for Equestrians?

December 302009

I need a really good local tack shop around Plano, Texas, Zip Code: 75093. Our old one, Newmarket, recently closed and I need a good one to go to. I can’t live without the smell of new leather that long!! HELP ME!

Wish I could help you! Its happening all around me also, small tack shops, feeds stores are closing because of big discount stores moving in (Selling Junk) or people buying off the internet, wait until they have to return it! We as horse owners need to support our local merchants. Sure they may be .50 cents higher on lead ropes, but if there is ever a problm, no questions asked! Grab another one! Try googling tack shops in Texas. Good luck!

How do you use a halter for a bridle?

December 302009

I’m currently training my morgan and she is nervous with bits, if I use a bit she would rear. I ordered a bitless bridle but it is not in yet. Is there a way to use a halter for a bridle?

You might try a twisted snaffle, my moody morgan actually did well with it but none others. To go without bridle, use any old halter with side clip areas. Buy a set of reins with clips on them and just attach them directly to the halter! It gives you very minimal control, so make sure you trust her before you try it, maybe on a lunge line first. Good luck!

What are good brands of western horse tack?

December 302009

i have wanted a horse for a while, and my parents are finally letting me get one. i am the most experienced person with horses in my family, but i have no idea what brand of tack to get! please help me!
links are appreciated, thanks in advance!
if it matters, i’ve taken western lessons on and off for 4 years

please think economically!!

For saddles: Crates, Circle Y, Martin are all good but economical.

For a headstall just find an inexpensive one that is made with GOOD quality leather. Doesn’t really need to be a brand name one.

Is their a tack shop in Phoenix,AZ that carry’s Healthy Hoof?

Unfortunately, we don’t own a horse. The only reason we’re getting it is because my mom want insanely strong nails! ( I like tack shops, that’s the reason we’re not buying it on the internet.)
Dose Tack Solutions by Leslie have healthy hoof?
If they say grooming products dose that mean they have it?

I don’t live in Phoenix, I live in Indiana. But even then it’s called google.

some shops on the last list aren’t in phoenix, never been there so maybe they are towns nearby.

A lot of times tack shops have horse care products that aren’t on the site. They usually only take the time to post the stuff that is the highlight of their shop and that will make them lots of money.

By the way, any hoof dressing that isn’t a tar based dressing (of course that will work too, but it is a little nasty to some people.)

I am interested in learning about antique/vintage saddlery and tack.?

I would appreciate some suggestions for reading material or other sources of knowledge on the subject. Thanks!

here are some of the books i have on vintage saddles.
old cowboy saddles and spurs, fourth edition by dan and sebie hutchins.
old cowboy saddles and spurs, seventh edition by gretchen and mike graham.
another good book that has a lot of history of the cowboys trappings is
cowboys and the trappings of the old west by william manns and elizabeth clair flood
these are good books but dont have all the saddle makers in them and sometimes you have to do a little more research online or finding some collectors.
