YOR High Noon Bridle-less Reining Appaloosa Stallion

February 282010

Posted in bridle | 25 Comments »

No bridle on the horse means that all the manuevers must be asked for with the legs, voice and seat of the rider. It requires good training basics. This is a 6 year old Appaloosa stallion named YOR High Noon – owned, trained & shown by Roger Johnson of Asquith, Saskatchewan, Canada. This video shows the first time High Noon was asked to perform without the bridle. (Filmed in 2001) Visit us at www.reining-appaloosa.com

Bitless Students, School Horses, Nurtural No-Bit Bridle

February 282010

Posted in bridles | 25 Comments »

“It’s a new world … It’s a new day!”

That’s the theme song that played as these young riders showed how well school horses can behave in a Nurtural bitless bridle. Maybe it truly is a new day – when people realize all they can do with horses … by removing the bit!
These girls are students from the River Ridge Riding Stables in Milton Ontario. Laura Colgan, the coach and owner, made the dramatic move of changing all her school horses to bitless bridles after one of her students started using a Nurtural Bridle from last year’s Royal.

Three times a day, from Sunday Nov 5th to the end of the Fair on Nov 12th, these young riders and horses put on amazing shows in the Spirit of the Horse Ring at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair!
Laura directed them through all the basic moves that you want a horse to do: walk, trot, canter, turn circles, perform figure 8’s, do transitions, halt, back up — and even go over a 3 foot jump!

These are school kids, most with only 1-2 years riding lessons. These are school horses who had only ever been to one show. Zeus is a 7 year off off-the-track thoroughbred who has only been at River Ridge since July. Polar is a five year old pony, who is much happier in a Nurtural bitless bridle. Even 5-6 year old beginner riders took part in the show – to demonstrate that they could stop the horses in a bitless bridle.

Where can I find a horse to lease?

February 272010

I’m looking to lease a Morgan horse in Missouri for riding and local shows. Nothing big, just a step higher from my mare who can’t be ridden for awhile. I can’t find any online through Dreamhorse, Horsetopia, and Equine.com for leasing, only buying. The farrier/vet doesn’t know of anyone, neither do tack shops. All I want to do is lease one, not buy. Any suggestions?

Any help is appreciated.

I know that Morgans aren’t overly popular in my area. I would suggest that you contact the local Morgan association and simply phone all the breeders.

Would you buy a saddle online?

February 272010

I have seen some nice deals on e-bay etc.. for saddles. I am looking for something in a 16" Western, Leather. The prices on e-bay seem to be better than local tack shops. I am asking would you buy one without sitting in it? Can anyone recommend a brand that they think is better? What do you think a good price range is? I have seen saddles up to $4000 at a tack shop near hear! I was hoping no more than 400. It is just for weekend trail riding.
Any help is appreciated.

I have bought several saddles from ebay and have NEVER had an issue with any of them.

Of course I know what I’m looking at and what I’m looking for. I go with Circle Y, Tex Tan, Ozark, Billy Royal, just to name a few of the better brands.

Here’s a Circle Y in your price range: http://cgi.ebay.com/Nice-Circle-Y-Equitation-Saddle-21290128301_W0QQitemZ120324253820QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item120324253820&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

On the lower price tags, Big Horn, Simco, etc.

Wintec gillet system users: best way to size a saddle and girth for english and best place to get it?

February 272010

Posted in wintec | 2 Comments »

When i first started riding with a trainer, I rode english. That was on my 14.3 hand arab mare, and her saddle is really small. I went and bought an english saddle set off of ebay for my 15.4h, narrow QH mare. The bridle is too small with her winter coat, and almost too small with her summer coat. The saddle is really high up off of the wither, and I’m sure I got the wrong size. I think she wears a size 36 english girth, and that doesn’t work with the size 15 saddle. Is it true that english saddles are two sizes smaller than western, because my western is 15? Also, what is the best way to fit an english girth, saddle, and bridle? I need one for regular classes, dressage, and hunter classes. I would like to fit one for my QH mare and my 1 1/2 year old appendix qh, that should be about 16 hh full grown. He does the same classes, so probably a close contact. Last, Where is the best, most affordable place to purchase the tack once i get the size? thanks!
Need a price range (hopefully) under 400…..thanks again!

NO! english saddles are two sizes LARGER than western saddles. to find your seat size…simply:
take a straight line from the saddle "nail" to the center of the cantle. this will measure saddle to the size. 17 and 17.5" are the normal saddle sizes, while 18" is for a little larger rider. when you purchase one, "N" is narrow, "M” is medium, "W" is wide, and "XW" is extra wide. you may also want to make a template of your horse’s wither. you can easily do this with a bendable wire 20" long. basically, you’re going to form fit your horse’s wither where the saddle will be sitting. then, transfer the horse’s fitting wire to a piece of paper by tracing it. you may also want to bring a picture of your horse’s back along with you to the shop.
