Alright so I’ve asked a uestion like this already but it never got answered very thoroughly. I want to know how would you know the tree size for a saddle for your horse. I know how to do it for western, but not English. If you need a picture, I’d be glad to supply it but I’d like to know if there is any specific way of measuring for saddles, girths, bridels, etc….

I have never known of a specific way for saddles. If you have a narrow horse (arab, some WBs and TBs) get a narrow tree, if you have an average horse, get a medium tree (most horses fall here). If you have a wider horse- draft crosses, some WBs, rounder QHs, etc get a wide tree.

Now, not all saddles are made the same way, so a wide in one brand may be a medium in another- find a saddle you feel comfortable in,and fits your horse well (same as with western- you don’t want any pinching).

Girths- all depends on the saddle and your horse’s roundness.

for example I use a 28 inch girth with my dressage saddle for my full draft horse. My sister, with a registered narrower TB, uses a 28 as well, but her girth straps on the saddle are a lot shorter. Once you get the saddle, you just measure with a tape from strap to strap.

Bridles- same sizing as in western- cob, horse, or oversized (also called warmblood).

It is still called Blu-Tac, but the substance is unknown to most Americans that I have met (and I’ve been living in the US for more than 5 years).
If you are trying to buy it in the US, you can find it on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006DPMSG/sr=8-1/qid=1149988281/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-8652950-2656610?%5Fencoding=UTF8
If the link doesn’t work, just search for Blu-Tack on Amazon.

I have been riding for about 10 years, since I was 4, and my parents never let me even touch a english saddle. All western. But I just got free english tack, but I wasn’t so lucky with the clothes. My 4h leader gave me boots and a helmet but that’s all I have.

i no this really probably doesn’t help but english riding is awsam a good way to find out is to go to your nearest tack shop horse and for rider and the best thing to do is just try things on! i hope this helps!! o by the way you should really go by the size you really are like say your size 10 in woemens clothes then there probly the same!! coz mine were!!

hope you have a good time riding in the english saddle im sure it will be great!! x

I thought they were the same, but I don’t have much experience with that kind of stuff. Where I ride, they keep all the horses’ bridles in the english tack room (each horse has its own bridle) just because there’s more room in there, haha. Most horses can be used for english AND western, and they use the same bridle no matter if they’re riding english or western. So is there a difference?

Often times, a western bridle will be made from thicker leather, and will be lacking a noseband. Things like conchos, and designs carved into the leather are common.

English bridles are often more subtle, and have a noseband. They usually look more simple that a western bridle, so there’s more attention on the face of the horse, not the bridle itself.

I have always ridden western, but I went to a horse expo this weekend and found an english saddle for only $25, so I had to get it! I was planning on starting Hunt seat this summer, but now I’m going to be doing it ASAP. I just need some tips on the tack itself.

I already have the saddle (which fits me and my horse) the leathers, the irons, and a fleece saddle pad. I still need a bridle, bit, reins, and girth. What I need are tips as to what sorts of styles/brands might be good. What type of bit and girth, style of bridle, etc. Also, is there anything else that I might need?

The horse is a 5 year old foundation bred AQHA mare. She is about 15.3 hh, and weighs in around 1,200 lbs. She does have a large head since her body is so big, so I would need a brand of bridle that would fit a bigger horse.

Thanks in advance for any help!

bridles- a plain bridle with a caverson nose band is best, it shouldn’t cause any problems or confusion for your horse, you can get them on places like ebay for very little, just watch out for stiff leather< and you can get synthetic ones that are just as good. i’m not going to give you expensive brands cos that can get very confusing and expensive, brands like kincade do go cost effective bridles!(try and get horse or full size)
http://www.horsefroogle.com/product-p/21319.htm

start of in a snaffle bit
http://www.brighteyesandbobtails.co.uk/acatalog/Section_bits.JPG

you don’t need to be to fussy about girth makes, ones with elastic are good,
