Now that we’ve found our new ranch in NC, we decided we want to include a tack shop as well. Is there someone who has experience running one that can give me some ideas, tips and maybe things NOT to do? things definitely to do?

sorry ive never run a tack shop but i read your question and i just wanted to wish you good luck and i think its really cool that you are opening a tack shop. i guess just be carefull with what you do with your money.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good western tack shops that have an online catalogue? If anyone knows any in Canada that would be great but the United States is ok as well.

Now that we’ve found our new ranch in NC, we decided we want to include a tack shop as well. Is there someone who has experience running one that can give me some ideas, tips and maybe things NOT to do? things definitely to do?

you always want to make the place look like things are selling even if they do not, and you want to keep the right things that people are using, if you are in an area where there is a lot of english farms and stables you want to keep good quality riding equipment, if in an area where there is more western you would keep good quality western tack and riding equipment. If the area has a lot of ropers whether team ropers or calf ropers you keep a good variety of ropes. And you always keep lots of show quality things like saddle pads in a variety of colors. One ting you do not want to do is buy lots of very expensive equipment for a tack shop. In North Carolina there is a good amount of western and english riders so you may want to stock both english and western bridles and bits.

This friday im going tack shopping and i can get one thing not too expensive.I already have a grooming box and treats any idea..cant get my mind fixed =D maybe a halter??

well make sure u try and get the cheaper/on sale item wich is quailty so bend it around a bit =]

um well theres so much to choose from wat about travel boots?

or maybe a new pair of half chaps or a saddle cover or bridle bag so much!

I’m applying at two different tack shops (Horse supply store) and I need to know what do I need to put on my resume that will be beneficial, and not just that I horseback ride & know my facts…

They want to know if you have retail experience, or experience selling things. They’d also want to know how comfortable you are talking to strangers. Always mention you ARE comfortable even if you aren’t, because it’s so easy to adapt to!

They also want to know if you’ve ever bought from them. If you have, mention you’d like to work for them because you really like their products.

Mention your very social, a hard worker, and will have a flexible schedule.

Tell them what they want to hear. Put yourself in their shoes, picture someone applying to work at your store… you can’t be "just anyone", add in information that makes you sound like you’ve been there, done that, know your stuff well, you’re smart, have a good education, etc.

Also, if they are selling products for horse health, familiarize yourself with how each functions. If you have experience with horse tack, and they’re selling it, make sure you know where each applies pressure, if the brand is any good, etc. – because customers can and will ask you tricky questions, and if you can’t answer, they won’t be coming back! That can effect your salary!

Also, when dropping off your resume, ask to give it to the manager or owner of the store. By giving it to another employee will leave you looking lazy and it’ll give you a bad impression. If they want a job interview, offer to shake their hand, smile, be polite, let them speak first, answer all their questions business-like even if they tell you to "relax" or "be comfortable". You want to show potential for selling things.

If they want a job interview, memorize your resume. Give them the resume, and as they read it in your presence, explain to them about everything you put in there and why.

If you follow this basic guideline, I’m sure you’ll get the job!

I am wanting to open a Saddle and Tack Shop in East Texas. I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has a business like this that would be willing to give me some guidance in finding suppliers for my merchandise. I have talked to a couple of people that have said you can find suppliers that are cheap but of course wont share the info. Let me know if you are willing to correspond with me on this. Thanks
