What would be some of the best english tack?
March 52010
Hey, I have a 17 hand thoroughbred gelding who’s done western for the last four years but I think we’re ready to start him riding english again. He’s done it before- but i haven’t. So of course i know close to nothing about english tack. What are some better english saddles & bridles? Things that i’d need to start him up? We’ll be starting jumping later on so hopefully an all around saddle that can be for the show ring & pleasure riding? Any ideas?
Thank you everybody. Me & my mother are currently talking about the tack you all suggested. We’re leaning toward the Bates Momentum saddle, though. The style & feel of it are simply amazing. We’ve got one from a friend that we’re testing for a week. Cobalt seems to love it. He’s been fitted for the saddle by my mother, & it seems like a perfect match for all of us.
& FYI some western riders DO fit their horses for western saddles. Just like english riders- we’d rather have our horses most comfortable & not sore/hurt to the point of hating a saddle being put on =-]
OK so if you are looking for all purpose saddles id recommend Wintec All Purpose- synthetic saddle that only needs to be cleanded with water , no saddle cream
For something a little more upmarket for all purpose I’d try Bates Caprilli all Purpose, made of leather and needs to be cleaned with bates saddle cream.
I do not reccomend status saddles , in my experience they have not sat well on teh horses back.
If you are looking for a jumping saddle:
Wintec Close contact- cheap, easy to clean and comfy for you and the horse
Bates Caprill Jumping saddle- little more expensive, leather, needs to be cleaned with cream, very very comfy
Bates Momentum- Top of the market in bates jumping saddles- bit costly but worth it if you want a saddle that will move with the movementg of the horse
Dressage saddles:
Wintec Pro dressage- Again easy to clean , nice seat , cheap
Wintec/ Bates Issabell Werth- I personally dont like these saddles but you may think different
Bates Innova- Latest in bates dressage saddles. There are two styles small block for the rider who rides a little more forward or bigger blocks for the long rider. I have one of these and they are very comfy and you feel safe in them , nice soft and deep saddle- a bit costly and needs to be cleaned
I like to go by bates or Wintec. Peter Horrobin , Kieffer and Stubbens specialise in Jumping and dressage saddles , not really all purpose saddles
Cheers hoped this helped

if you’re looking for an all-round saddle, Wintec is probably your best bet. it’s excellent quality and very popular. i don’t know if it’s popular in the show ring, although i can’t see why it wouldn’t be.

These would be some great choices to start with.
I would recoomend a leather saddle if you ever plan on showing
saddles:

This one is great:

Nice bridle:

I would recomend soft rubber/leather reins:

a standard eggbutt:

Something like a Wintec or a Close Contact would be good. They’re all purpose, so you can do anything.

I would recommend buying tack from the "HDR" brand… also known as Henri DiRivel.
Saddles cost $600-800 and bridles run from $120-200. You can find them used for reasonable prices as well.
This tack does take some time to break in, but (if cared for properly) becomes VERY comfortable and lasts forever. They also tend to come in more narrow trees so they fit all my thoroughbreds very well!
If you want to show in hunters eventually do NOT buy an "all purpose" saddle as the flaps will be MUCH too long. Buy a comfortable jumping saddle and it will work very well for shows, training and pleasure riding
In my opinion (and it will vary with everyone) the BEST english tack comes from the Prestige brand. Super soft, ultra comfy and fully customizable.
Saddles range from $3000-$4000 and bridles from $500-$650.
You used to have to go to Italy to purchase this tack but it has become more popular in America and is now available in most catalogs and even stores!
Obviously this is not what I would recommend for you to "start up" but I so think it’s the best.

The best saddle is the saddle that fits your horse the best. Good saddle fit is imperative. you will need to have your horse professional fitted (Western saddles should be too, but western riders Never do this????!!!!) You should learn about whether your horse needs a cutback pommel, gussets, etc. You should also never ‘pad’ a saddle to fit. That’s like stuffing socks in your Dad’s shoes to make them fit you – it doesn’t work. Then, the saddle that best fits your horse needs to fit you. You should also get professionally measured. I recommend going to a big event where dozens of saddle makers are – because you will learn pretty darn quick that you’ll get a different answer from everyone you ask and they can’t all be right.
Some super quality dressage saddles are:
Roosli
Devecoux
Barnsby
Lemke
Borne
Hermes
Amerigo
Schleese
Some middle quality saddles are:
Bates
Prestige
Albion
County
Passier
Sommer
Some cheaper low quality saddles would be:
Stubben
Kinkade
Courbette
Collegiate
Henri De Rivel
Wintec is a synthetic variant of bates saddles.
In hunt seat/event
The top brands would be:
Devecoux
Tad Coffin
Beval
Schleese
The mid brands would be:
Prestige
Pessoa
Kieffer
Bates
The cheap brands would be
Collegiate
Wintec
Stubben
Crosby
Courbette
Kinkade
Frank Baines
Moritz

Here are the tack i use. But i would be careful what you buy. Some saddles will make the horse back sore and hurt their whithers.
Saddles:
1.Stubben
2. Crump
3. Crosby.
These work great and don’t hurt the horse. they are alaround horse saddles.
Here is a tip on finding the right saddle. Once you found a saddle at the store flip it over and make a fist with your hand. Slid your hand down the Gullet. If you can slid your fist all the way down then it will fit and will not be too tight. If your fist won’t go all the way down then it won’t fit the horse. Because the gullet is too small.
Bridles:
It really doesn’t matter what kind of bridle, as long that it fits. Since you have a thoroughbred (i have a thoroughbred) i would use a ”horse” bridle. They have cob, pony, horse, and x- large horse. The bridle would be called a Snaffle Bridle.
I hope this helps!!!!!!!!!
