Okay, here is the situation. I have been making glycerine soap, saddle soap, pine tar balm and beeswax leather cream for over a decade now. I started because I hated the idea that ingredients are not always listed on leather care products and I refuse to use mink oil. In that time many people have asked me to make these products for them. As it stands I make a batch of most of these items at least once per month. I am thinking of going into business. Let me ask you this. Would you buy handmade soaps and leather care products from your local tack shops or online knowing that they were handmade and cruelty free?

definitely! i wish there was something like this! i just bought some leather cleaner today, and if there was a handmade and/or cruelty free product, i would have bought it in an instant. especially being a vegetarian, cruelty free is great when i can get it, i already feel guilty having leather boots and a leather saddle.

so yes, i would buy it

July 2008 was given a horse from my neighbor-
9year old, 15h, QHx.
She broke him out a as a 3 year old and rode him western on trails, her daughter rode him English.
Well, how I got him- long story but the short version was the daughter had gotten into an accident with the horses half brother and she ended up dieing(very sad) but the women sold everything horse related and gave away what she couldn’t sell. She couldn’t sell the horse, so offered him to me to replace a horse I had put down earlier that summer.

Well, since then I can not find a saddle for him. He’s so awkwardly shaped, his back anyways, that nothing fits him, the women who gave me to said she didn’t know the saddle that her daughter rode him in but it was bought for$800-1200 new. I’ve made templets of his back and have not been able to find a saddle it fits into.

I’ve tried Collegiates, Wintecs(the none Easy Change Gullets fit), Bates, and Henri De Rivels.
I’ve sent his back templet to local tack shops asking if they have saddles that fit and they couldn’t find any that fit.
In all, I’ve tried 20+ saddles in the last 18 months and none fit, I would have never guessed it’s so very stressful not having a fitting saddle. But I’ve ended up riding him bareback since I’ve had him.

He has narrow withers, but a nice pair of broad shoulders, smooth/fat back, and slightly flat/curved topline.
Do any of you have anything in mind of something that would fit?
I need a 16.5-17inch saddle. All purpose/close contact.

Expensive or not I don’t care at this point. color not a factor just something that fits

Please&thank you so much.
/r/25smxqx/6
/r/1zoxpxc/6

Put tinypic(dot)com and you’ll see pictures of him

You could try out a Courbette with their "Flexible E-Motion Tree and Panel Concept". Courbettes are good quality saddles and aren’t too expensive. I bought a new Cresta Junior all purpose saddle from ebay, and it does in fact fit a variety of horses with the flex tree. If you can, get one on trial first so you can see if it fits your hard to fit horse or not before you buy it.

I don’t ride western so I haven’t tried out the western saddles, however, I ride in a Status dressage saddle and it’s great. Really comfortable, light, barely shows any wear and tear.

It is as cheap as kincade (which I have ridden in and absolutely hate) and much cheaper than wintec.

I’d recommend you try one out at the local saddle store and see whether you like them.

So i have barley any experience in horses. I have had one lesson before and i stunk! lol… I also rode 1 or twice about 2 years ago. That’s it. I also read TONS of books about them and did a project about them and researched a ton and watched movies about riding. I live in the city in the winter, fall, and spring. In the summer i stay in this country place but im back and fourth to the city and the "country". I also have grandparents in vermont. Should I take a few lessons first before i lease a horse? And if i leased i could either keep it in the "country" at a stable or i could go to vermont for a week or 2 and lease it there and keep it in my grandparents house. It would be a lot easier if i kept the horse in the "country" but it would be extremely expensive. I don’t know what to do!!! What should I do ??
Also what are good cheap horseback riding boots? I don’t need anything fancy. What are good cheap breches for kids?
I also have a sister that wants to lease a horse to that is 13 and i am younger than her. We would share the horse. We dont know how to tack up either. INBARN LEASE OR MY GRAMPAS HOUSE IN VERMONT???! LEASE A HORSE WITH OUT LESSONS AND IF I NEED LESSONS ABOUT HOW MANY?? GOOD BRAND RIDING BOOTS AND BREECHES FOR KIDS!

Please answer those questiions in CAPS.
Sorry for writing so much!

For sure take lessons for a while. it depends on your ability, and your trainer etc when it comes to how long you need to ride before you lease a horse-it also depends on what you want to do with it. ie jumping, pole bending etc. I had been riding for three years before I leased my first horse. You need to know how to everything yourself, including tacking up,grooming, and riding and controlling the horse.
I suggest leasing the near you. When you lease you want to be able to see the horse as often as possible. There is no point if you would have to travel a long way. It depends on how far away the "country" is. I bet you could find riding stables near you, just google it-or look in your yellow pages etc…there could be adds.
No riding boot are really cheap. But thats an opinion I suppose. Seeing as you probably dont have adult sized or so feet I suggest paddock boots(English…western may differ.). They are less expensive and would fit you better more likely. You will have to find a tack store around your area. You could try and animal feed store\outdoor store or something of that nature. Breeches the same thing..or you can look online…I get my boots from Dover.com. They have good brands. If you dont want very good boots,or are just looking for something cheap, try antique or thrift stores. Really do. Sometimes you find decent boots for very cheap.
I suggest you get good experience with horses first though. Learn how to ride well, and control the animal. Learn how to take care of it. Don’t forget that when you lease many people will NOT let you keep their horse anywhere. Generally the full owner decides where to keep the horse. You usually have to pay half of everything as well. Half the vet and farrier bills, half of the stabling…and the expense of lessons, boots, clothes,a helmet, and saddle.

I have a 5 or 6 year old female horse. And you can ride her barback, but when we try to put the bit in her mouth, she backs away. Well i only have 1 bridle, and i have another male horse.Should i get a new bridle, or should i keep trying to put it in her mouth?

just clean it between uses. I train rescues for a horses rescue in my area. I foster some and keep some;) but I have a personal mare who was a rescue I kept and she hated to take the bit. basically you can do several things, you can put your finger in the corner of the mouth press down on the tongue which forces the mouth open or you can back the horse up so its bum is almost touching your fence. this way the horse cannot back away. I do this out of habit when I tack horses up anyways but after you do that use you right hand with the bridle use your elbow to have the horse lower its head slowly using your left hand on the bit tell your horse to open while you lower the bit. if she throws her head the bit will pop her on the nose which she will not like making it easier to have her just accept it. my horses I just say open and they do, if not stick your left hand index finger in her mouth and slip the bit in. good luck

My father in law gave me some old leather bridles, and I was wanting to oil them to get them more supple without spending a fortune on special leather oil. I usually use neatsfoot (100% pure) on my tack, but was trying to find a less expensive way.

To retain its beauty and other desirable qualities, Leather requires frequent conditioning to replace the natural lubricants lost during normal use. With proper care, Leather can be protected from excessive dryness that can cause it to crack, and from moisture that may cause it to swell or mildew.

1. Because unprotected leather is susceptible to spotting from water and other liquids, a newly purchased leather item should be treated immediately to prevent permanent stains. The use of too much oil and wax, however, can clog pores, causing leather to lose its ability to allow air in and moisture out.

2. Always hang leather coats on wide padded hangers. Use shoe trees in shoes and boots. Stuff empty handbags with tissues to retain their shape.

3. Do not store leather goods in plastic bags or other nonporous covers. If clothing must be stored in a garment bag, keep it open for ventilation.

4. Allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally away from any source of heat. Apply a little leather conditioner when the leather is nearly dry to restore flexibility. Follow this with a full conditioning treatment after the leather has completely air-dried.

5. In winter, promptly remove any salt deposits by sponging with clean water, then follow with the treatment recommended above for wet or damp leather. To prevent mildew, protect leather from excessive humidity.

6. In a dry environment, regularly condition the leather in order to prevent it from drying out and cracking.

7. Do not use waxes, or silicone formulas or other leather preparations that impair the ability of the leather to "breathe".

8. Never use caustic household chemicals to clean leather. Also, avoid leather preparations that contain alcohol.

9. Avoid turpentine and mineral spirits as they can pull color.

10. Caution. Use of mink oil or other animal fats will darken leather.

Now get out there and enjoy your new leathers.
