What are good brands of western horse tack?
December 302009
i have wanted a horse for a while, and my parents are finally letting me get one. i am the most experienced person with horses in my family, but i have no idea what brand of tack to get! please help me!
links are appreciated, thanks in advance!
if it matters, i’ve taken western lessons on and off for 4 years
please think economically!!
For saddles: Crates, Circle Y, Martin are all good but economical.
For a headstall just find an inexpensive one that is made with GOOD quality leather. Doesn’t really need to be a brand name one.

Circle Y Saddles are really nice, I don’t ride western, but i’ve noticed that they are quite nice, and not too expensive.

My favorite saddle is the close contact show saddle by Billy Cook. It has nice leather quality, nice silver quality, and it is comfortable. I paid a little over four thousand for mine, but you can buy them without as much silver for lot cheaper. My second favorite saddle is my Circle Y show saddle. I don’t know how much I paid but I know it was cheap. No tarnished silver, leather is good, and the feel of it is ok.

well name brand saddles are way expensive but are worth their weight in gold… which would be Billy Cook, Circle Y, and I love the Benchmark I ride in…. another good one would be a Crates saddle. You really just got to shop around and pick which one suits you and your horse best.

Check out the Bargain Corral in Texas- You can pick up a Billy Cook saddle for well below the price of a store. Also, watch your paper for folks getting out of the horse business. You don’t need bling, what you do need is really good leather- no synthetic! in good condition. No cracking, signs of stress, or wear. If you buy used, please replace the latigo’s, cinch, and reins right away for safety. I like my Pro Choice cinch- it doesn’t slip, lets in air, and no sores. A really good saddle pad is a must. A rope halter is a bit cheaper, I like cotton rope leads to prevent burns in your hand in case of a pull back. don’t forget the brushes, combs and fly spray!

Circle Y, Billy Cook, Simco, Longhorn. There are some really nice saddles with no brand that are just as good also though. Be carefull when buying a new saddle.. a lot of new saddles are made in India and are of poor quality. Look around at used tack stores for used QUALITY leather saddles. Or, if you prefer syntheitc I think Abetta is the best hands down.

I really like Circle Y saddles. They really hold up for anything they are put through. The stirrups are easily adjustable from long to short. I was looking through tons of saddles and none of them went long enough until I got my Circle Y. They are put together really well and are easily maintained. They also have three-way rigging which lets you select how to cinch up your horse.
Don’t forget to get something that fits your horse too. It has to fit them correctly so that it does not pinch or make them uncomfortable.
Circle Y has a wide range of sizes for people and horses as well as the many different types of seats. You should select the proper tree width for your horse.
Brand new Circle Y’s can be costly, but barely used ones or just trail ones can be found anywhere for a great price. They are definitely a great choice.
Any sort of bridle would work as long as it fits your horse and doesn’t rub his/her face.
I do not like Weavers. From my experience with buying them, they can be oily, sticky, and too stiff as well as hard to clean. Of course all leather needs breaking in, but it just didn’t work out the way I needed it to.

http://www.westernshop.com has hand-made tack..this stuff lasts FOREVER, I got a barrel saddle custom made from them a couple years ago and it i amazing, awesome quality, it really is perfection…anyways it is expensive, but you’ll never have to replace it….also dont go for Billy Cook…they used to be nice saddles…now they have gone really cheap and use that really nasty gross ”cardboard” leather stuff….HORRID! You may be able to find an older used Billy Cook that would be nice…I’d say look for a cheaper (like $800) used saddle…they knew how to make them a few years ago…now the brands are more focused on making money than providing quality products to consumers….
Happy Trails,
