What’s the name of this piece of horse tack?
February 272010
My local stabes put it on first, it is brown and isn’t leather or rubber (this is at my stables, may be different somewhere else) and it goes in between the horse’s leg, and the buckle faces upwards and it somehow attaches to the saddle.
Could you please identify this piece of tack and how to attach it to the saddle?
It’s a breastplate – but how do I attach it to the saddle?
it isn’t a martingale, sorry but i don’t have a picture.
That sounds like a breastplate. Like this. https://secure-server-connection.co.uk/libbystack/shop/site_images/t_95_01.jpg
Its purpose is to keep the saddle from slipping back.
Here is a website about it.

It gives a lot of information about the different kinds of breastplates and their purposes. Hope I helped! Best of luck!

A breastplate?

A running martingale?

A standing martingale?

Can you elaborate?
Edit—-
Ah, okay.
Well, here is the picture I am going to refer to: http://www.rods.com/eccStoreImages/product_images/ShowBook06/475083_R.jpg
The middle triangular part goes over the horses head, and fits comfortably down at teh base of the neck/shoulders with the main point on the triangle facing down. (like in the picture)
The long, bottom strap has a loop at the end. That slips on the girth, and rests right at the middle of the bottom of the girth.
The two shorter straps go onto the "d rings" on the upper part of the saddle near the pommel.

If it is a breast plate, this is how it attatches to the saddle:
There is a piece that goes inbetween the horse’s front legs, and loops around the girth. Then there is a peice that goes around the horse’s neck. There should be two metal rings on your saddle up in front of the stirrup bars. There are hooks on the breast plate that latch on to these rings.

Sounds like a nylon breast collar.

Is that it?

Ok, well your description is a little vague, so I’ll do my best. It sounds like a breastplate? Here are some styles of breastplates, both english and western:

Or, maybe it was a martingale?

Or perhaps a western tie-down? I don’t have a pic, but they are just a strap that attaches from the girth to the noseband of a western bridle. Kind of like a standing martingale.
Or maybe it was a stud guard? This is a girth with a stud guard built in, but you can buy the stud guard seperately to put on a normal girth.

Without more information, I can’t tell you exactly what it is. Also, horse tack is always leather, nylon, or a synthetic leatther.
EDIT- You said its a breastplate. You slide it over the horse’s neck and there are 2 short straps that buckle to the drings on the saddle.
