The Macomb Homeless Coalition On January 25th, 2007, the Macomb Homeless Coalition, with the help of numerous volunteers, conducted a Point in Time Count of the homeless individuals and families in Macomb County. On that one day, 1142 homeless individuals and family members were found in shelters, vehicles, hotels, and on the streets. Over 150 of these were children. In 2005, our PIT counted 947 homeless people. Among the Coalition's members are not only shelter and human service agencies, but also government, businesses, landlords, community housing developers, the faith community, homeless and formerly homeless individuals and citizens who care. |

FACT: Families with children are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population. FACT: If people cannot afford a place to live, they are at risk of becoming homeless. FACT: Families with children are losing their housing at unprecedented rates. FACT: A drop in affordable housing and the limited scale of housing assistance programs are the primary causes of homelessness. FACT: The largest federal housing assistance program is the entitlement to homeowners to deduct mortgage interest from income for tax purposes. Federal housing policies neglect the needs of low-income households while disproportionately benefiting the wealthiest Americans. FACT: Housing cost has risen, putting housing out of reach for the poorest Americans. *Please Note: Facts and statistics are based on National and Michigan data. |
