groom, exercise rider, trainer.. anything!?
March 72010
in the (kinda) near future i would like to be a groom, or exercise rider.. currently i can’t drive (so i want to wait untill i can) , but i believe i have the skills to do this..
anyway, how should i go about "sellling myself" i can’t do this at my barn because my trainer’s daughter is my age, and when someone needs their horse ridden they ask her…
I was thinking of putting up a poster in the surrounding barns, and in the local tack shops.. something simple like
"high school student, willing to exercise, groom for shows, or school horses of any age. Experience with hunters, english and western pleasure, and dressage. call….."
does that sound okay? anything else i should say?
I’ve been riding for 7 years, and have re trained many horses.. so i wouldn’t be worried dealing with different horses.
Also: how much should i charge? Should i make a release form allowing me to be in contact with their horse?
anything appreciated!
i don’t want alot of money, basically just compensation for driving…
i guess i dont want money, just to put myself out there as a rider, and eventually a trainer.
hows this:
High School student willing to groom at shows or exercise horses of any age. Experience in dressage, hunters, and pleasure (both western and english)
Currenty training dressage, but year end awards in the NSHA pleasure series. Experience with many different horses, willing to ride anything!
Contact me at….
i would also put riding 7 years, and then name my different trainers (who are willing to be contacted as a refrence)
Here is a website that is really helpful at finding such jobs. I keep it bookmarked since I would love to one day quit my 9-5 and work with horses, but alas….bills need to be paid.

Are you doing this for a paying job? Because there are ALOT of girls your age out there doing this for free, just because they love riding. I don’t think anyone would pay you to ride thier horse, they would just get a willing girl to come ride him, and there is no shortage of those.
EDIT: In that case, I would do like you said, advertise online, local tack shops, and stables. Be sure to put down all your experience (Shows, schooling, what type of lessons you take, etc).
You might be suprised how many calls you get. There are alot of people out there who don’t have time to ride thier horses.

dream of horses pretty much has everything. be sure to put how long you have been riding too, most people don’t want someone who has only ridden for a year or two.

There are quite a few teenage girls out there doing this sort of job for free, so if you do charge anything it should really only be to cover petrol. You should also make sure you are insured so that if you do have an accident you don’t get expensive medical bills.
Advertise at all saddleries in your area, online, at local barns, spread the word at shows and amoungst your friends, make yourself known. It may take a while to get people wanting you to ride their horses, but just work at it and get the word spread =)

With out any actual qualifications it is highly unlikely that you would get paid for this kind of work. Most people with horses would feel that you should feel honored if they let you ride their horses. You would more likely get paid for doing the dirty work, like tack cleaning, mucking out, general dogs body. If however you want to gain more experience around different horses, then offer your services for free,so you can travel to shows, groom and exercise the horses.Yes do advertise where ever you can. I am sure that if you took on a grooming job during your vacations, the owners would pay you a small amount any way, especially if they valued you.
