TACK STORE SURVEY! ANYONE CAN ANSWER!!!!!?
February 252010
This is for business research project. I’m doing a tack store. Just answer the questions truthfully and as completely as you can. Thanks!!!!
1. Do you own a horse? If not, what do you do?
2. How often do you shop for horse supplies?
3. Do you order tack online, or in local stores?
4. Do you ride western or english?
5. What are your favorite brand names of any kinds of horse supplies?
6. Any suggestions for how you think tack stores could be improved upon?
Thanks soo much for taking my survey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. Yes, currently own 7.
2. Several times a week.
3. Both. I prefer to go to local stores, but I’ll order basics on line.
4. Both.
5. Flysect. Zimecterin. Horseman’s One Step. Ariat. Durango.
6. Put the real horse stuff near the front, and the cutesy kids socks and such in the back. I hate having to troop past all the fluff to get to what is actually needed.
Provide larger sizes of jodphurs/breeches/pants – more and more older, heavier people are riding (and riding well!), and it’s difficult to find proper sizes. We’re not all size 0 teenagers (wish we were, but…)
Provide tailoring (samereasons as above!)
Have experienced people on hand to assist. If a store has 3 dozen types of bits, someone should be around to give advice on what is and is not appropriate. The store should provide this training, as even experienced horse people don’t know what all this stuff is, and what’s appropriate for what discipline.
Have a directory of horse experts in your area – listings of vets, farriers, humane officers, boarding stables, and so on.

1. Yes
2. Pretty often. Everything seems to break or I realize a need something else. It is a never ending list of wants and needs.
3. I order online. Its easier.
4. English
5. I really don’t have a favorite brand. I buy my things from the Dover Sadderly and I buy the cheaper products that are still of a nice quality.
6. Hmmmmm, lower prices? Lol! I’ve only been in an actual tack store once (Dover Saddlery) and it was really nice. Tack stores are set up well and the staff are usually helpful. That’s because horse people are always nice to other horse people.

1. Yes
2. Well I browse online everyday, but we go to the shops for tack every few months, in fact I need a new jumping saddle now.
3. Things like bridles, splints, things like that online. Things like saddles, I would never get online unless I knew EXACTLY what I was going to get from it.
4. English, but we are starting western.
5. To me it doesn’t matter as long as it’s good quality, and not overpriced!
6. Keep consignment items and new items seperated and make sure everything is nice and clean on display! Also really do your research when pricing your stuff, look at how other shops in your area price them and just make them a little smaller.

1. Do you own a horse? If not, what do you do?
yes, 2
2. How often do you shop for horse supplies?

3. Do you order tack online, or in local stores?

4. Do you ride western or english?
both

Classic Equine!!
6. Any suggestions for how you think tack stores could be improved upon?
No, I couldnt do it myself so I give them the credit for even trying. You cant be perfect, there is always one bad employee or a mispackedge- it is what it is.

1. yes. I own a gray TB gelding, goofball, named Wyatt.
http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w335/handav93/DSC01363.jpg
2. On an as needed basis. Typically once every few months.
3. I try my best to get it in local stores because the shipping fees get crazy. But my closest complete tack shop is 45 mins away from my house, and 1 hr 15 mins away from the barn. So if I just need a small case of tack cleaner, then I’ll order it online. but if I need a few things then I’ll go to the tack shop.
4. English!
I ride hunter jumper. But starting cross country in a couple weeks! So excited!
5. I like Lancer tack. Very nice, and comfortable saddles. And not too expensive.
Roma grooming stuff is nice and half chaps too.
6. They could be more organized. Our tack store has some bathing stuff in one corner, then it has the sponges and bucket s in the complete opposite corner. And its BIG, so its frustrating to walk back and forth. Its like that in a lot of places.
Bigger selection of accessories, like gloves, saddle pads, zocks, and half chaps.
Hope I helped! Best of luck!

1. Yes, gelding AQH pleasure horse
2. Usually all the time, I keep my eye out for any good deals around
3. funny thing, for certain supplies I buy online, western tack local store, and english tack another local store. Show clothes, both online and local shops
4. both
5. Shapelys, Absorbine, are the first two that come to mind
6. I wish that tack stores offered more discounts, one store I go to i get 4H, and AQHA discount and another store neither will count. I have a lot of friends who show horses and pretty much I’m the one known to shop around looking for the better deals, then I tell my friends about it.
One tack store that I love I can call ahead order. When I was in high school, I’d call ahead and have one of my family members pick it up for me, or I’d pick it up. My family doesn’t know a whole lot about the products that I use, (I’m very picky about products), so they like how I can call a head, pay for it over the phone and have them pick it up.
